Keshan carpets originate from the city of Keshan in the province of Isfahan in central Iran. These rugs are knotted in symmetrical (Persian) knots in the surrounding villages, which gives them a high knot density and durability. We have two quality levels of Keshan rugs in our range. The more exquisite rugs with a higher knot density are the Keshan Shadsar. Traditionally, Keshan rugs are made from high-quality wool, with the wool often coming from local flocks of sheep and the warp and weft being made from cotton.
In the Persian Empire, Keshan was one of the most important trading centres along the famous Silk Road, which still exists today. It is advisable to be careful if you want to buy a Keshan rug. Carpets are often offered as Keshan, although they are actually Indian-made. These carpets often tend to be of inferior quality, and a direct comparison reveals clear differences.
