The city of Nain in the province of Isfahan in central Iran is known worldwide for its carpet production. Some of the most beautiful and valuable carpets in Iran are made there. Nain carpets are a symbol of traditional craftsmanship and beauty and are appreciated by lovers of handmade carpets all over the world.
Nain carpets are divided into different categories representing different classes. Depending on the knotting density, they are divided into 4La, 6La, 9La and 12La. The lower the number, the higher the quality and complexity of the carpet. The knotting density can be recognised by the carpet fringes. For example, if a fringe consists of two threads, it is a 4La carpet. If it consists of three, on the other hand, it is a 6La carpet.
Experienced weavers often work on a very fine Nain rug for over a year. The designs vary from floral motifs to geometric patterns, often in shades of blue and white. Traditionally, Nain rugs are made from high-quality wool, often with silk accents for added lustre and elegance. Thanks to their fine materials and careful workmanship, Nain rugs are considered extremely durable and long-lasting.
