They are named after the Ziegler & Co. Company, which was founded in Manchester, England, in the late 19th century. The company originally commissioned carpet designs, which were then produced by local weavers in Persia (now Iran), Afghanistan and Pakistan. Ziegler carpets are characterised by their particular beauty, versatility and quality.
They are known for their fine designs, which often include traditional floral patterns, geometric shapes and stylised motifs. A characteristic feature of Ziegler rugs is their soft colour palette, which often consists of soft earth tones. The rugs are often stone washed to create a washed out effect of the pile. Afghanistan and Pakistan have a long tradition of carpet making, and Ziegler carpets represent a fusion of these cultural influences and craft traditions. These rugs are sought after worldwide for their quality, beauty and cultural significance and are often valued as works of art for floor coverings.
