Tips for Buying Carpets

Oriental rugs create a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room. As timeless classics, they exude elegance and style, and their versatility allows them to blend harmoniously into different interior styles, enhancing the overall look of a room. Before deciding on a rug, there are a few considerations and preparations you should make to ensure you choose the perfect rug to suit your needs and preferences. Here are some tips to help you before you buy a rug:

The optimal size and placement

An attractive floor covering acts as a framing element for your interior and emphasises the beauty of a carpet. It is therefore advisable to choose the size of the rug carefully to ensure that it does not cover the entire floor. In contrast, a rug that is too small can easily "drown" in a spacious room.

  • Use a ruler to accurately measure your room, and in particular, keep in mind the margin between the maximum and minimum size that your desired carpet may have.

  • In order to present the lustre and colours of an oriental rug in the best possible way, it is advisable to arrange the rug so that the direction of the pile faces away from the light source. The perspective from which the rug is viewed has a significant influence on the brightness and lustre. If the viewing direction matches the direction of the pile, the rug will appear brighter and shinier compared to the opposite perspective.

  • In the living room, it is advisable to choose a rug size that leaves a minimum distance of 10 cm between the rug and the neighbouring sofas. In the dining room, the size of the rug should be such that the chairs can be moved easily without bumping into the edges of the rug.

The right colour

  • Consider the interior design style of your room. In a modern, minimalist room, neutral carpet colours such as grey, white or beige may work well, while in a classic or traditional room, richer shades such as burgundy, deep blue or olive green may work better. Dark carpet colours tend to make rooms appear smaller, while light colours can help to make the room appear larger. So if you are working in a small space, light colours could be a good choice to create a nice atmosphere.

Note the style and decor

  • Think about the style and colours of your rug to match your existing décor. Think about whether you prefer a traditional, modern, oriental or contemporary rug. It is recommended that oriental rugs with a central medallion are not covered by furniture. If you want to place furniture on top of rugs, it is advisable to choose rugs without a dominant centre medallion.
