Handspun Wool
Hand-spun wool is produced by hand spinning instead of machine production. Carded fibres are processed into threads or yarns using a spindle or spinning wheel. The spindle is a simple hand tool, while the spinning wheel is a mechanised version. This traditional process of wool spinning has a long history and is still practised around the world today. Wool carpets made from sheep's wool are extremely hard-wearing and water and dirt repellent thanks to their natural fats. The natural elasticity of the fibre also makes wool carpets resistant to pressure marks. Each hand-spun yarn is unique and can have natural irregularities that give the end product a rustic and individual character. The production of hand-spun wool is environmentally friendly as it consumes little energy and requires no harmful chemicals. It is often a sustainable alternative to industrially produced wool yarns.
