Styling a Ziegler Design rug

Made by hand
The contemporary drawing is only the starting point. A finished rug requires a sequence of skilled manual processes in which material knowledge, colour control and consistent tension matter at every stage. Small shifts in line or tone are part of the individual character of handcraft.
The wool is cleaned, carded and spun into yarn by hand. Its subtle irregularity gives the finished pile a richer, less mechanical surface.
Colours are balanced around the chosen abstract, graphic or garden-inspired design so that contrast remains expressive but liveable.
Skilled knotters build the pattern knot by knot over the cotton foundation. Depending on size and complexity, this stage can take many weeks or months.
The pile is levelled, the rug is washed and carefully dried, then the edges, surface, colour balance and overall quality are checked.

A striking composition does not by itself make a high-quality rug. Look for a balanced relationship between colour and proportion, a wool surface appropriate to the intended use and careful finishing throughout. In a busy dining or living area, a robust lower-profile rug may be a more practical choice than a finer piece intended mainly for visual impact.
Care and longevity
Vacuum regularly with a smooth floor head and, where possible, without a rotating brush. Work gently in the direction of the pile. Blot spills promptly with a clean, pale absorbent cloth rather than rubbing, which can push moisture and soil deeper into the wool and disturb the surface.
