Materials of our oriental carpets
Our hand-knotted carpets are predominantly made from first-class materials that are known for their natural elasticity and durability. The carpet backing is often made of cotton, which provides stability and serves as a base for the pattern. The use of natural dyes from plants or minerals gives our rugs a warm and vibrant colour palette. Discover the craftsmanship and diversity of our handmade rugs, which are not only decorative but also represent cultural heirlooms. Find out more about the materials we use here.
Cotton
This plant-based material has a long tradition and impresses with its robust properties. Cotton can absorb moisture and gradually return it to the room air. Thus, carpets made of cotton contribute to a pleasant room climate and also have a thermoregulating effect. Due to its tensile strength and stability, carpets made of cotton are particularly hard-wearing and are therefore also suitable for entrance areas, children's rooms and similar environments. Since it is a vegetable fibre, these carpets are also suitable for people allergic to animal hair.
Ghazni highlands sheep wool
Wool is still the most important fibre for the production of carpets. The wool of highland sheep is particularly high-quality and resistant. It offers a higher strength than the wool of lowland sheep. Ghazni highland sheep wool is coarse and thick, which makes it good for making warm and durable carpets. The colour of the wool can vary and ranges from white to grey to different shades of brown. Highland sheep farmers often strive for sustainable animal husbandry practices in order to minimise the environmental impact. The wool of these sheep is a natural and renewable raw material. Overall, highland sheep wool is a unique and valued material that combines tradition and functionality.

Silk
Silk is the luxury fibre for the production of carpets. Even the production of the fibre is complex and cost-intensive. Silk fibre is one of the most durable natural fibres in carpet production. Its robustness and soft feel make it the ideal material for carpets. Because the silk fibre is very thin, the knotting density of these carpets is particularly high and the typical pile height is low. Motifs and knotted patterns therefore have a particularly intensive effect. The typical sheen of silk gives the carpets the special shimmer for which the material is known.
Handspun Wool
Hand-spun wool is wool that has been spun by hand instead of being produced by machine. The actual spinning is done by turning the carded fibres into threads or yarns using a spindle or spinning wheel. The spindle is a simple hand tool, while the spinning wheel is a mechanised version of it. This traditional process of spinning wool has a long history and is still practised in many parts of the world today. Carpets made from sheep's wool are very hard-wearing and, thanks to the natural fats, resistant to water and dirt. Due to the natural elasticity of the fibre, wool carpets are also resistant to pressure marks. Every hand-spun yarn is unique. It can have natural irregularities that give the end product a rustic and individual character. The production of hand-spun wool is environmentally friendly as it consumes little energy and requires no harmful chemicals. It is often a sustainable alternative to industrially produced woollen yarns.
